Free fish and chips offer set to reel in Whitley Bay visitors but you will have to be quick

Good weather alone is enough to attract the crowds to the coast but this Wednesday Whitley Bay is set to be even more popular than usual due to a fish and chip giveaway.

Fisherman's Bay on the beach front is out to bring some summer holiday cheer to locals with the offer of freebie food.

It has teamed up with the Love Seafood brand and Whitby Seafoods to provide 150 free portions of fish and chips and scampi and chips from noon on Wednesday. And there's nothing fishy about the offer: those keen to snap it up just need to be quick off the mark.

The food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and the lucky ones will be able to make the most of their lunch while taking in the surrounding seaside views.

Steven Dhillon, owner of Fisherman’s Bay on the promenade, said: “This summer is all about being out and about and spending time with people you love.

"What better way to improve your day out than with a free portion of fish or scampi and chips for lunch?

“There are 100 free portions of fish and chips and 50 free portions of scampi and chips up for grabs for the first 150 visitors to Fisherman’s Bay which is open from noon."

He added: "But be fast as when they’re gone, they’re gone!”

The Whitley Bay shop said it delighted to join forces on the giveaway with Love Seafood, which is part of public body Seafish that supports the seafood industry and which is on a mission to inspire the nation to fall in love with those treats from the deep.

Traditional fish and chips is seen as one of the ultimate feelgood dishes, as well as being one of the most popular summer takeaways.

Last year it seems that the fried favourite also helped cheer up many people's lockdown year as a whopping 141 million portions were sold during 2020 in the UK.

And, with this year set to see lots of families enjoy a 'staycation', it is hoped that fish and chip shops and other seafood businesses will enjoy a bumper season.

The first 150 customers to visit the Fisherman's Bay shop on the seafront from 12pm will receive a free portion of their choice.
