Free festival 'to defy terrorists'

London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced a free music festival this Saturday (July 16) to remember those killed in the London bombings and provide an opportunity for the public to show their defiance of terror.

The full lineup of London United has yet to be confirmed, though both Suggs and Billy Bragg have indicated they will be playing. Much of the rest of the bill at Burgess Park, south London, between noon and 8.30pm, will be based on acts booked for the Rise anti-racism festival, which this event replaces.

The mayor said: "The bombings that took place last week indiscriminately attacked Londoners irrespective of race, culture, religion or age... This free gig will show that London stands firm and celebrates its status as a city of all races, faiths and cultures, the very thing the bombers hate."

Jarvis Cocker - who is tipped but not confirmed to appear on Saturday - added: "At this time it's important for people from all backgrounds to stand together; it's also important for them to enjoy themselves. This event allows them to do both."
