Free beer for Edinburgh war veterans

Local MSP Sarah Boyack helped deliver a surprise early Christmas present to some of the Scottish Parliament's neighbours yesterday.

Whitefoord House house sits directly opposite Holyrood's Queensberry House entrance on the Canongate. It houses around 80 members of Edinburgh's ex-service community.

Boyack joined her Labour colleagues Jackie Baillie and Richard Baker to make the short trip over the road yesterday to the Scottish Veterans' Residencies with two cases of beer. It was gifted to Baillie by Italian brewer Peroni.

The Scottish National Party's Michael Matheson told the Scotsman he felt the donation was a "party political game" related to Labour's blocking of plans for minimum pricing on alcohol.

But Baillie said:

"I was pleased to receive this beer from Peroni, but decided to donate it to the residents at Whitefoord House.

"At Christmas it is particularly important that we remember our veterans and serving men and women wherever they are."

Baker added:

"Much as I enjoy the occasional tipple these guys deserve it much more than me. I hope that they have a happy Christmas and a good new year."
