Free app gives Londoners info on the capital's trees

The app uses the London Tree Map

Londoners can discover more about their surroundings with a free app that provides information on trees in the capital.

GoJauntly, an app offering guided walks around green city spaces, has launched a new map feature, which pinpoints the location of more than 700,000 trees lining streets and parks around London.

Users can then click on the map to find out more about the species and its history in the capital.

The app uses the London Tree Map, which was launched by the Greater London Authority in 2015 to “raise the public profile of the important contribution of trees to our urban environment”. It also hoped to identify where more trees were needed.

App Co-Founder Hana Sutch said: “Street trees play a really important role in cities and the benefits of them are considerable. Studies have shown that children are adept at identifying cartoon characters and those from video games, but are unable to identify common British species.

“Our mission is to do everything we can to encourage walking, exploration of our local surroundings and help people of all ages connect with nature.”

The London-based app has recently launched in the US, Canada and Australia.
