Free agent safety Taylor Mays works out with Seahawks

The long and winding road of safety Taylor Mays’ career might be making its way back to where it all started.

Mays, who was born in Seattle and attended O’Dea High School, is working out for the Seahawks on Wednesday – according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

Mays would not only be reuniting with the city of Seattle, he’d be reuniting with coaches Pete Carroll and Ken Norton as well. Both of them coached Mays at USC when he was there from 2006-2009.

Mays was a second round pick by the 49ers in 2010, and spent the next six seasons in the NFL with San Francisco, Cincinnati and Oakland.

He was released by the Bengals in 2016 following a second suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Mays ended up playing one season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, before he was released in April of 2018.

Now, he gets a chance to work his way back into the NFL. His relationship with the city of Seattle and coach Carroll could make him an immediate fan favorite should he make the roster.

He has a long road ahead of him, but it’s not impossible to imagine the 31-year-old former star safety working his way into a reserve/special teams role with this team next season.
