Free agent RB Spencer Ware takes visits with Colts, Jets

Chiefs free agent RB Spencer Ware is continuing to take visits with teams.

Earlier this offseason, Ware took a visit with the Lions who had a clear need at the running back position. The Lions have since signed RB C.J. Anderson to a one-year deal. They’re likely off the table for Ware, but he’s recently been on two visits.

First up, Ware visited with the Colts according to Houston Chronicle writer Aaron Wilson. There is some familiarity with the Colts because of general manager Chris Ballard. He was the Chiefs’ director of football operations when the Chiefs brought on Ware during the 2015 season.

The Colts have some depth at the running back position. It’s unclear where Ware would fit and if he’d be an upgrade there. It’s possible they could look to add Ware to spark some competition at the bottom of their roster.

Ware also took a visit with the Jets on Wednesday per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The Jets are an intriguing option for Ware because they just signed LeVeon Bell to a massive deal. When you look at the RB situation behind Bell, the depth chart is quite barren. Their most experienced back is Elijah McGuire who has appeared in 23 games and started just five for the Jets in the past two seasons.

Having some competition for Ware’s services is a good thing for the Chiefs. They should hope that if Ware does leave in free agency he is signed to a contract before May 7th. If he does, and the contract is big enough, he could qualify towards the compensatory pick formula for the 2020 season.
