Report: Free agent QB Josh Johnson turned down contract offer from Ravens

Free agent quarterback Josh Johnson tried out for the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The team was evidently impressed by his performance, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Ravens offered Johnson a deal following the audition. However, Rapoport said the quarterback turned down Baltimore’s offer, walking away because he believed the situation with the Ravens wouldn’t be ideal.

Baltimore tried out Johnson just a day after quarterback Robert Griffin III fractured his right thumb at Saturday’s practice. While the team is optimistic that Griffin will be ready for the season opener — his timetable is four to eight weeks — Baltimore evidently still wanted to bring on a veteran arm for insurance. With five seasons of NFL experience under his belt, the 29-year-old Griffin is the only veteran quarterback on the team’s roster; the two others are second-year starter Lamar Jackson and rookie Trace McSorley.
