Free agency impacts Draft Wire’s latest 4-round projections for Chiefs

Draft Wire’s latest 4-round mock draft is a bit different from what we’re used to seeing.

Typically mock drafts for 2019 have all sent a load of defensive talent to Kansas City. However, after the first wave of free agency, it’s beginning to look like Brett Veach has alleviated the need to go all in on defense early in the draft. After all that is what free agency is for — creating flexibility in the NFL draft.

This draft doesn’t send the Chiefs an edge rusher or a safety which seems a little crazy considering the players that the Chiefs have let go over the past two weeks. Take a look at who was chosen for the Chiefs down below:

Round 1 Pick 29: Marquise “Hollywood” Brown

“Sure, the Chiefs have bigger needs on defense, but that won’t stop them from giving Patrick Mahomes as many weapons as possible. After filling more pressing needs with veteran free agents, the Chiefs can splurge with an undersized but explosive playmaker in Brown.” – Luke Easterling of Draft Wire

This pick certainly would make sense as the Chiefs have seemingly done their research on Brown. Also you have to remember that the Chiefs GM Brett Veach told the Ringer’s Kevin Clark that Antonio Brown (who is the cousin of Marquise) is the template they use for finding receivers for Patrick Mahomes. It’d make a lot of sense to see the Chiefs go after the younger, cheaper version.

This draft pick could also fueled by the uncertainty surrounding what will happen with Tyreek Hill. How that situation plays out still remains to be seen. The prospect of adding Brown to a receiving corp with Hill wouldn’t be all that bad either.

Round 2 Pick 61: Elgton Jenkins C Mississippi State

After Mitch Morse became the highest-paid center in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, people seemed to realize the Chiefs don’t have a clear cut starting center anymore. Austin Reiter is expected to be the starter after signing an in-season contract extension. The Chiefs also went through three centers over the course of last season due to injury.

There’s only a handful of centers in this draft class, and Elgton Jenkins is one of the better ones of the lot. He’s played center 26 games for Mississippi State over past two seasons and he’s only been credited with one sack. That sack came against Quinnen Williams who is widely regarded as one of the best players in the 2019 draft class. He also has starts at left tackle, left guard, and right tackle during his career. That type of versatility doesn’t go unnoticed when you can only dress a few offensive linemen on gameday.

Round 2 Pick 63: Joejuan Williams CB Vanderbilt

I don’t know that Joejuan Williams makes it all the way to this pick, he’s tested and interviewed well ahead of the draft. If he does make it to this pick the Chiefs should be turning in their draft card with some pep in their step.

Williams had both formal and informal interviews with the Chiefs at the 2019 NFL combine. When he was asked about them at the podium, he was glowing. So I take it that his interviews with the team went very well.

The Chiefs have a model for their rebuilt secondary, and Williams is a perfect fit for the player they’re currently missing. Williams and Former Eagles CB Bobby Taylor have very similar size and athletic profiles. That’s what Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo are looking for in Kansas City.

Round 3 Pick 92: Daniel Wise DT Kansas

The Chiefs have shown some interest in Daniel Wise. He met with the team at the Shrine Game. While defensive tackle isn’t a big need for the Chiefs, defensive line coach Brendan Daly did coach Wise’s brother Deatrich in New England. Relationships are often a driving factor in the NFL.

Wise is a disruptive player, high-effort player. He is very stout playing the run, but he’s also quick and capable of rushing the passer. If the Chiefs happen to create more cap space by releasing a veteran defensive tackle like Xavier Williams, that opens the door for a pick like this to make more sense for the Chiefs.
