Freddie Woodman has spoken of his delight after confirming his long-term contract with the Magpies.
Chronicle Live revealed on Sunday that Woodman had penned a deal that could run for four years and now the 23-year-old has spoken of why he decided to stay after months of speculation.
The goalie will join Swansea City on loan for the season and has agreed an initial three-year contract with the option of an extra year.
Woodman had less than a year of his previous deal to run and could have started talking to clubs in January with interest from Celtic and Arsenal.
Woodman told the club TV channel: "It's great news for me - I can look towards the future and see myself as a Newcastle player. It's great for the club to commit to me and I can stay there another three years, which is huge.
"I see myself as a Newcastle player and my ultimate goal is to be the Newcastle number one, so hopefully I can do that."
And speaking on the longevity of the deal, he added: “When my dad told me they were offering me three years I was made up.
"I couldn’t believe it and just wanted to sign it straight away!”
