However he also hinted that no one ever really knew him and that he could be a recluse who "pushed people away".

Bobby told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard: "I might have been one of the last people to speak to him because I went over to Spain to do a couple of gigs last year. Someone said that Freddie was living in that place in Spain.

"I got in touch with him, I found his number and phoned him up. At first he didn't really feel like talking and called me back.

"He said, 'How you doing Bob' and I said, 'Alright, how are you Freddie? Would you like to meet up for a cup of tea? I'm in town.' And he said, 'No, I've not been feeling too well'."

A High Court judge ruled Miss Ward was telling the truth and dismissed the case in July 2015.

Starr, pictured entertaining pub drinkers at a karaoke in a Fuengirola bar in 2016, became the subject of one of the most famous newspaper headlines ever in 1987 over claims he ate a hamster after a performance at a nightclub.

He later insisted the hamster claim was a complete fabrication.
