Freddie Ljungberg warns Arsenal will 'deal with' Mesut Ozil after substitution strop

Arsenal interim boss Freddie Ljungberg has insisted that he will "deal with" Mesut Ozil after the midfielder's sideline tantrum during Sunday's defeat to Manchester City .

Kevin De Bruyne inspired the Premier League champions to a comfortable 3-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, with the Belgian scoring two sensational goals and setting up team-mate Raheem Sterling.

In contrast, Ozil had an afternoon to forget as he struggled to make an impact on the game before being replaced by teenager Emile Smith Rowe just before the hour mark.

The 31-year-old German was met by a smattering of boos as he slowly left the pitch, and he showed his frustration by taking off his gloves and volleying them into the air.

Addressing the incident after the match, Ljungberg told Sky Sports : "For me, I took Mesut off because I wanted more energy in the team."

"I thought Emile did really, really well when he came in.

"How Mesut wants to react is up to him and that’s something we’ll deal with later."

Asked to explain further, Ljungberg added: "I’m here on a day-to-day basis so we’ll see what that is for the future.

"But of course we want players in the right way."

The incident took place less than 24 hours after Arsenal released a statement distancing themselves from comments made by Ozil on social media regarding the treatment of Uighur Muslims in China.

Meanwhile, Sunday's defeat means that Arsenal have still just won one of Ljungberg's five matches since he took charge following the sacking of Unai Emery.

Despite the result against Pep Guardiola's side, the Swede insisted he was "proud" of his players.

"They are the champions," he said.

"I was proud of our boys. When you look at the age of the side that finished it was not an old side.

"The players showed spirit but it is hard to play at 3-0 down."
