Freddie Ljungberg handed defensive blow ahead of Arsenal's crucial West Ham clash

Freddie Ljungberg is facing further defensive problems with centre-back Rob Holding a doubt for Arsenal's crucial trip to West Ham as the centre-back continues to battle a knee injury.

Holding, 24, has not featured for Arsenal since before the international break and has managed only 77 minutes of Premier League action this season after returning from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered 12 months ago.

When he has played the former Bolton Wanderers defender has been perhaps Arsenal's most consistent defender and has been on the losing side only once since the start of last season.

In Holding absence Ljungberg has suffered the same defensive issues that dogged his predecessor Unai Emery with none of his three senior defensive options impressing in his first two games.

Ljungberg knows confidence is key to improving Arsenal’s fortunes

Shkodran Mustafi's somewhat improved form in the Europa League saw him promoted to the top flight side in the Swede's first game but two decisive errors from the German saw Sokratis Papastathopoulos return to face Brighton and Hove Albion.

Both Sokratis and David Luiz struggled in the 2-1 defeat and Ljungberg could well reshape his defence again when his side travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham. Calum Chambers is also available to Arsenal who would still benefit from the consistency Holding provides.

Meanwhile Dani Ceballos remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and is yet to return to training a month after limping out of a 1-1 draw with Vitoria in the Europa League.

Arsenal's opponents on Monday night could be without as many as five senior players when they welcome the Gunners to Stratford. West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that Michail Antonio (hamstring) will be the subject of a late fitness test before his involvement in confirmed.

Lukasz Fabianski (hip), Manuel Lanzini (shoulder) are out whilst Jack Wilshere (groin) and Winston Reid (knee) are doubs.
