Freddie Ljungberg explains Granit Xhaka situation at Arsenal

Freddie Ljungberg has revealed Granit Xhaka has been given a fresh start at Arsenal following Unai Emery's sacking.

The Swiss midfielder's future at the Emirates looked in doubt after he was stripped of the Gunners' captaincy following his outburst against Crystal Palace .

Xhaka missed a number of games towards the end of Emery's tenure, but Ljungberg is ready to bring him out from the cold.

He was included in the starting line up for Ljungberg's first match in charge against Norwich on Sunday.

Asked by Sky Sports' presenter Geoff Shreeves whether Xhaka had a clean slate, Ljungberg responded: "Absolutely.

"I believe that everyone has a possibility. I felt that this was the best balance of our team to play that way, and I take that decision."

The incident involving Xhaka in the home match with Palace has become the defining moment of Emery's time in charge.

Xhaka goaded Arsenal's fans who were booing him as he walked from the pitch after being substituted.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took over the responsibility of skipper following Emery's decision to remove Xhaka from the captains group.

Aubameyang kept the armband for the clash with Norwich, and Ljungberg explained his thought process behind the call.

"For me there has been so many discussions about the captaincy I thought it was just better to leave it as it is," he added.

"Auba's a great captain, he's a great football player, so that's how we're going to go."

He said: "You looked at a team, and I know Unai Emery has got great experience as a coach, and he's been successful at different places.

"But if I didn't know anything about Unai Emery, I'd look at that team and say it wasn't coached properly, because of the lack of organisation in the team.

"Yes they've got poor defenders, but to see basketball games week-in, week-out, when your team are involved in them you think, 'what's actually going on on the training pitch?'"
