Freddie Ljungberg drops hint over Arsenal future after Mikel Arteta talks

Freddie Ljungberg looks set to remain at Arsenal after hinting he will be part of Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff.

Swedish coach Ljungberg was promoted to the first-team staff in the summer, stepping up from the youth ranks to become an assistant to Unai Emery.

After the Spaniard’s sacking, Ljungberg was named interim boss while club chiefs sought a permanent appointment.

Ljungberg was in charge for five games, winning only once - at West Ham in the Premier League.

And there has been speculation that, the return to the club of new head coach Arteta, could lead to his departure.

Arteta’s return from Manchester City was confirmed on Friday, with the ex-club captain having signed a three-and-a-half year deal at the Emirates.

During his debut press conference on Friday evening, Arteta revealed that he held talks with Ljungberg on Friday, stating simply: "I had a conversation with him today.”

Additionally, when quizzed on his potential coaching staff, he stated that paperwork is currently with club lawyers and that “it will be announced very shortly”.

But while Arteta was in the process of discussing a new era in north London, Ljungberg himself took to social media.

"The message from me is still the same, get behind us and support the team!”

"It’s been an honour to have helped the club I love for the last few weeks and I am excited to work with Mikel Arteta and his staff moving forwards”.

Ljungberg will take charge of Arsenal for the final time when they meet Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Arteta will watch his new side from the stands before taking training at the start of next week.

He will make his debut on the Gunners' bench against Bournemouth, at Dean Court, on Boxing Day.
