Freddie Ljungberg and Patrice Evra in total agreement over Nicolas Pepe red card

Former Manchester United defender Patric Evra and former Gunner Freddie Ljungberg were in total agreement over Nicolas Pepe's red card against Leeds United.

Pepe was sent off in the 51st minute of Arsenal's goalless draw with Leeds at Elland Road following an apparent headbutt on Ezgjan Alioski.

The Ivorian's dismissal meant the Gunners had to play for more than 40 minutes with 10 men, desperately holding on to the goalless draw with Leeds dominating the tie.

The start was only Pepe's second under the season with the winger having to wait patiently for a real opportunity this season, but his actions will now likely leave him watching on from the sidelines for some time, starting with a three-game suspension.

And that's what makes it all the more baffling as far as Sky Sports' pundits for the game were concerned. Speaking on Super Sunday, Evra said: "I’m disappointed. It came from frustration.

"You can see Pepe isn’t happy. I think he should say sorry to all of his teammates, because Arsenal had a plan and everything changed after that.

"Alioski deserves an oscar because he plays it so well. If I was the coach of Leeds, I would be so happy with Alioski, but come on, it looked like he broke his nose, but he didn’t have anything. Really silly from Pepe.

"When you’re not playing a lot, and Arteta gives you a chance, don’t cry when you’re not playing the next game.”

Former Gunner Ljungberg agreed, adding: "He stopped his own progress with his own behaviour. I thought this game would be very good for Pepe because Leeds played man for man, he would get isolated against his left-back and he could do him.

"I thought he would be a match-winner today, but instead it ends up like this.”

Leeds dominated the tie and Evra believes they deserved all three points after hitting the woodwork a number of times.

“Yes, they deserved more," added the former Manchester United full-back. "It was a great game, they created so many chances, but that’s when it’s a lack of quality.

"You can’t have 24 attempts, and not score a goal. They were unlucky sometimes - they hit the crossbar and the post, but a really pleasant game to watch and if they keep going like this, then they will win games.”
