Freddie Kitchens will let OC Todd Monken call plays vs. Lions

Bowing to the tradition which got him his own first experience as a play-caller a year ago, Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens has decided to let new offensive coordinator Todd Monken handle some of those duties in Thursday’s preseason finale against the visiting Detroit Lions.

Kitchens stated on his weekly show on the Browns radio network that he will turn over some of the offensive direction duties to Monken. He also admitted it won’t be the first time, either.

“I haven’t really fully decided, but I know Todd will call some of them,” Kitchens said. “Some of it depends on what we do at the quarterback situation initially, but he’ll definitely get the opportunity. He called some of the other games but we just didn’t advertise it. Just didn’t feel the need to. In case it went bad, I didn’t want him suffering the consequences from it.’’

Monken has been an offensive coordinator in the NFL for several years, including for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last fall. It’s a change from Kitchens, who was the Browns’ QB coach last season at this time under head coach Hue Jackson and coordinator Todd Haley.
