Freddie Kitchens shoots down pleas to let Todd Monken call the Browns offensive plays

In his Monday press conference, Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens quickly put the kibosh on any notion that he would surrender the offensive playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

“That’s not even being considered,” a defiant Kitchens responded when asked if he would cede control of the offensive playcalling to Monken.

Kitchens made several curious play decision in the Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and the Browns offense has underachieved relative to the talent on hand. But letting Monken call the plays appears to still be off the table for the 1-2 Browns.

“Not going to happen,” Kitchens reiterated when asked the same question once again. “It’s me, it’s my fault. Todd does a great job during the course of the week … but when things mess up it’s going to be on me.”

Kitchens did acknowledge he would have made different decisions on play calls in retrospect, notably the draw play on 4th-and-9 that drew widespread derision. He also said he’s confident the team will get through the “growing pains” quickly.
