Freddie Kitchens: ‘our roster isn’t filled out yet’

There is already some fierce competition in Browns training camp for several spots on the final roster. The current 90 players get whittled down to 53 in three more weeks. Players scrapping for status and security try to best their mates in practices and the preseason games.

But they are also competing against players who are not even in Cleveland right now. That’s something coach Freddie Kitchens was quick to point out after the impressive preseason win over Washington.

I don’t know if you guys believe me or not, but our roster isn’t filled out yet,’’ Kitchens declared on Friday. “We’re continuing to search for guys at all positions. Wide receiver is no different.’’

He proved true to his word on Saturday. The team signed Brandin Bryant and Travis Vornkahl, former CFL players who will compete at depth spots along the lines. Those are not glamorous moves; very few roster forecasts projected Tracy Sprinkle or John Yarbrough — now ex-Browns thanks to the new additions — to make the final 53-man roster.

Consider Kitchens’ decree a warning shot against complacency.
