Freddie Kitchens hints at using Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt together

With Kareem Hunt injected into the Cleveland Browns lineup, the possibilities of using multiple running back sets are a popular topic of conversation. Hunt was the 2017 NFL rushing champ as a Kansas City Chiefs rookie. He joins Nick Chubb, the NFL’s leader in rushing yards per game through the first eight weeks of the 2019 campaign, to give the Browns some serious firepower in the backfield.

Will head coach Freddie Kitchens and offensive coordinator Todd Monken really put defenses to the test and deploy the two dynamic backs together? Kitchens hinted it’s a possibility in his press conference this week.

“I definitely think that both of their skillsets offer you plenty of opportunities to do a lot with those guys,” Kitchens said in a press conference. “They are both excellent runners, and they both catch the ball very well out of the backfield. They are good protectors. That makes them good all-around running backs.”

The Browns have not used multiple running backs on the field together on a single snap during the regular season. While he’s not as skilled as either Hunt or Chubb, Dontrell Hilliard does offer the same sort of versatility out of the backfield. But thus far, Kitchens has opted to play his RBs one at a time.

Chubb still ranks second in yards per game on the ground with 100.4, netting 804 yards in the Browns’ eight games.
