Freddie Kitchens has a simple philosophy for pass coverage

One of the qualities players love about Browns coach Freddie Kitchens is his ability to keep it real for them.

When asked if the cornerback position changed with the shift to Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator from Gregg Williams, Kitchens offered a more simplistic view of the Browns pass defense.

“No,” responded the rookie head coach. “Our philosophy at cornerback is to play the defender and (their) guy doesn’t catch the ball.”

The question stemmed from adding Greedy Williams, who is a press-man corner but not all that comfortable in zone or off-man. That was exposed in a rookie minicamp rep widely disseminated on Twitter:

Williams wasn’t asked to play in that type of coverage at LSU often, but it is something Wilks deployed frequently in his defenses with the Cardinals and Panthers.

It doesn’t seem like Kitchens is all that worried about any potential schematic misfit with the team’s top draft pick.

“There is always an adjustment,” Kitchens explained. “There is an adjustment from me to Hue (Jackson). There is an adjustment halfway through the season from me to Todd (Haley). There is always an adjustment. These guys are resilient enough that they will take the adjustment in stride and run with them.”
