Freddie Flintoff feared being eaten by Loch Ness Monster during TV show swim

Conspiracy theory fan Freddie Flintoff thought he might be eaten by the Loch Ness Monster when he was filming in Scotland.

The TV star had to jump into the loch from a seaplane with pal Jamie Redknapp at the start of A League of Their Own Road Trip: Loch Ness to London.

Filming in the winter, the pair were hit by the freezing water and a fear of what might lurk below.

Speaking via Zoom, Flintoff, 43, from Preston, said: “I’d love to believe that there’s something in there.

“I love conspiracy theories like the Moon landings, Bigfoot, flat Earth, I love all this.

“When we got put in, you have in the back of your mind that there’s something down there, whether it’s a monster or a big fish or something prehistoric, I’m not sure.

“But I’m invested in it, me. It’s so deep there could be anything in there.”

It was an opening challenge that saw Flintoff contemplating what his final moments might look like if Nessie said hello.

He said: “What a way to go, eh?

“I’d expect it in Preston town centre with a kebab on my chest.”

The English cricketer is proud to be a fifth Scottish.

He and former Liverpool FC star Redknapp, 47, did ITV’s DNA Journey.

He said: “I’m over 20 per cent Scottish, which I’m happy about.

“As a kid, we used to go on holidays over the Border to a static caravan and now I take my family up to Loch Lomond and Cameron House.”

Because of Covid, the pair and comedian Romesh Ranganathan had to forgo a sunnier road trip to stay in the UK. It also meant the return of Jack Whitehall.

In next week’s opening episode they endure some tough physical challenges and in episode two they don kilts for a Highland Games challenge.

The show starts at Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness.

It also sees Flintoff and Redknapp tackle the depths of a forest, under the guidance of former Royal Marine Commandos Aldo Kane and Jason Fox.

● A League of Their Own Road Trip: Loch Ness to London is on Sky One and Now TV at 9pm on April 8.
