Fred sets target for next season after 'difficult' first campaign at Man Utd

Manchester United midfielder Fred is bidding to put his tough start to life at Old Trafford behind him ahead of an important season for the Red Devils.

The Brazilian arrived in Manchester with plenty of promise, having cost the club £50 million to prise him away from former club Shakhtar Donetsk.

But the season didn't turn out as hoped for both player and club, with Fred only managing to play a bit-part as United missed out on Champions League qualification.

However Fred hopes the forthcoming campaign won't be a repeat of last year, and remains positive of an improvement in the club's fortunes.

Speaking to United's official website, via MEN , he said: "Last season, my first one here, was difficult, but I think I ended the season off okay, and I hope next season will be really good for me and a lot better for Manchester United, and I am excited to be a part of that."

Fred was signed by former manager Jose Mourinho, but found himself in and out of the side under the Portuguese coach.

His chances haven't fared much better under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who used the 26-year-old sparingly while he struggled to get to grips with the English game

Solskjaer did give Fred more of a run out in Europe however, playing in the last-16 second-leg win over PSG, before featuring in both defeats to Barcelona in the quarter-final tie.

And despite the Red Devils missing out on the chance to be among Europe's elite next term, Fred feels they still have a good chance of silverware.

"Unfortunately we couldn’t go a little further in the Champions League and in the other cups," Fred added, "and we didn’t do as well as we wanted in the league.

"So I think there are things we need to improve. As a team, we will discuss what went wrong so that we can have a better season and challenge for trophies. That’s what we all, and the fans, want the most."
