Fred sends message to Manchester United critics in Brazil win vs Uruguay

Fred started again for Brazil as they thrashed Uruguay 4-1 in their final World Cup qualifier.

Brazil were already guaranteed of topping the Conmebol table and ended their qualifying campaign emphatically in Manaus.

Manchester United midfielder Fred superbly assisted Neymar for Brazil's opener, clipping the ball over the Uruguay defence for the Paris Saint-Germain forward to control, round goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and finish from a tight angle.

Fred played 88 minutes before he made way for Edenilson in what was the 28-year-old's tenth start in the last 12 Brazil internationals he has been available for.

United striker Edinson Cavani lined up for Uruguay and completed 90 minutes. Luis Suarez scored Uruguay's only goal. Leeds winger Raphinha struck twice for Brazil and Gabriel Barbosa was also on the scoresheet.

Due to the timing of the qualifier, it is highly unlikely Fred or Cavani will figure for United in their Premier League fixture at Leicester on Saturday.

Brazil and Uruguay's encounter kicked off at 1.30am UK time on Friday morning - less than 36 hours before United take to the pitch at the King Power Stadium.

Fred was on the bench for Brazil's win over Venezuela last week but started in the draw with Colombia two days later. Cavani came on at half-time in Uruguay's previous two qualifiers against Argentina and Colombia. Uruguay finished second.
