Fred sends another message to Manchester United in Copa America quarter final

Manchester United midfielder Fred completed 90 minutes as Brazil reached the Copa America semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Chile.

Lucas Paqueta settled the contest with a 46th minute winner but Brazil had to hold on after Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus was sent off just two minutes later for a dangerous foul.

Having not played for the national side since October 2018, Fred was recalled for the Copa America and two World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.

Fred lined up in both qualifiers and then started in three of Brazil's four group games in the Copa. He only sat out the draw with Ecuador as Brazil had already qualified for the last eight.

Brazil coach Tite restored Fred to the starting XI against Chile alongside Casemiro of Real Madrid, with Liverpool enforcer Fabinho an unused substitute.

Premier League-based Jesus, Ederson, Thiago Silva, Roberto Firmino, and Richarlison also lined up for Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. Fred has now attained 17 caps and is likely to start against Peru in the last four on Tuesday.

Edinson Cavani is expected to start for Uruguay, who take on Colombia today before Argentina face Ecuador in the final quarter-final.

The Copa America final falls on July 11 and Fred is not expected to report back at United until next month.
