Fred pinpoints what was missing from 'great' Manchester United season

Manchester United midfielder Fred believes a lack of silverware was the only thing missing from a 'great' season for the club.

The Brazilian international has established himself as a key component of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side over the past year, playing an integral role as United finished second in the Premier League.

United's league campaign was an undeniable improvement on their previous efforts under the Norwegian, however they still finished the season trophyless after an agonising penalty defeat in the Europa League final.

Solskjaer's side could quite easily have ended the season with a piece of silverware had things gone their way against Villarreal, but Fred is still happy with the campaign overall despite the disappointing conclusion.

“Definitely, for me the team's done really well and been growing over the season," he told club media when asked if signs of improvement had been shown.

"We didn't start that well as we didn't have a pre-season. We had the Europa League semi-final which prolonged last season. We didn't have a pre-season and got better and better over the season and reached the final. I think overall the team's had a great season, we could have achieved more, we wanted to win more trophies, but I think generally it's been a great season.”

When asked to evaluate his personal achievements Fred once again reiterated a need for the club to finally add silverware after four years without a trophy.

He added: “It's really important to me to be starting in games, to be in the eleven. I've played and started in a lot of games this season. I'm really happy with this, happy to have been in good form and having a great season together with the entire team. As I've already said, I want much more, more trophies with United, I want to achieve a lot here and I'm sure there's a lot more to come.”
