Fred Perry to open new Bristol city centre shop

A major clothing brand is opening a new shop in Bristol city centre.

Fred Perry is launching its latest store in the Park Street building that was most recently home to women's fashion retailer Whistles.

The company has secured planning permission to repaint the timber of the listed shopfront, as well as add new signage and carry out a minor refurbishment of its bronzed sashes.

All existing internal decoration features including ironwork, fireplaces, doors, windows and staircases will remain unchanged, although there will be some "minor interior shopfitting works".

Builders are currently on site carrying out the work but it is not known when the transformation will be complete.

Fred Perry was created by the legendary British tennis player of the same name, who launched his eponymous brand at Wimbledon in 1952.

The iconic polo shirt was initially only available in two colours, white and black, but proved to be a huge worldwide success.

The brand's laurel wreath logo, which is based on the original symbol for the annual south London tennis tournament, was popular with mods in the 1960s before becoming associated with skinheads and the National Front in the 1970s.

Today there are around 20 Fred Perry stores across the UK, including one in Bristol at Quakers Friars.

It is not known what will happen to this branch when the Park Street outlet opens.

Bristol Live has contacted Fred Perry for comment and is awaiting a response.
