Fred McLeod to join Lions preseason broadcast team

Longtime Pistons announcer Fred McLeod returns to Detroit and will join the Lions broadcast team as the play-by-play announcer during the preseason this year. He will be joined in the booth by former Lion Chris Spielman and on the sideline by Tori Petry, both of whom were in those roles last season.

“McLeod, a six-time Emmy award winner, is a play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Cavaliers and executive producer of multimedia at Fox Sports Ohio,” the Lions said in a press release. “Prior to joining the Ohio affiliate, he served 22 consecutive seasons as the Detroit Pistons play-by-play announcer. A Cleveland native, McLeod moved to Detroit in 1982, where he became a sportscaster for WJBK-Fox 2 and later with WDIV-Local 4. He previously served as the Lions preseason TV broadcast play-by-play announcer from 1983-88. McLeod began his broadcasting career in 1974 as a sportscaster for KQTV in St. Joseph, Missouri.”

McLeod will take over for Matt Shepard, who is doing play-by-play duties for the Detroit Tigers and would not have been available.

“The trio will broadcast three preseason games locally on Fox 2 Detroit (WJBK) and throughout the Detroit Lions Television Network: Aug. 8 vs. New England Patriots, Aug. 17 at Houston Texans and Aug. 29 at Cleveland Browns.”

The Aug. 23 preseason game vs. the Buffalo Bills will be nationally televised on CBS.
