Fred Done's Salboy to host public consultation on £100m Newquay 'landmark' development plans

A developer is set to host a public event to discuss its £100m plans for a “landmark development” on Newquay’s seafront.

Warrington-based Salboy has early-stage plans for a mixed-use development around the site of the Hotel Bristol in the Narrowcliff area of the Cornish tourism hotspot.

Salboy - which is co-owned by Fred Done, the billionaire founder of betting chain Betfred - currently owns the hotel and two residential properties on the same plot.

The property firm’s redevelopment proposals include a new 75 to 80-bedroom four to five-star hotel, a number of residential apartments, a restaurant, commercial spaces for national and local businesses and amenities including landscaped public access routes, a new 56-seat cinema and new wet leisure facilities.

The event at the Hotel Bristol on Wednesday, May 18, will be the first opportunity for the public to see the current plans for the site, which will include CGI visuals, building material options, 3D models and various reports.

Simon Ismail, managing director of Salboy, said: ”We want to be as transparent as possible with our plans for the site. Hosting the event in the pre-planning phase gives local stakeholders a chance to have their input before we submit a formal planning application.”

Mr Ismail said the Hotel Bristol - which is currently operated as part of the Best Western franchise - had been a “great supporter of the community”, and Salboy wished to uphold its reputation with “whatever replaces it.”

He added: “Our aim for the day is to answer the burning questions around the changes coming to Narrowcliff and inspire the public with our designs.

“We’ve been working hard alongside the council and relevant authorities to arrive at these initial plans and we’re looking forward to sharing them with everyone.”

BusinessLive’s sister website CornwallLive has previously reported Salboy had held “early conversations and talks” with national restaurant chains Wagamama, Nando's and Five Guys regarding the proposed commercial units at the site.

Salboy recently acquired land in the duchy near Camborne, where it plans to build almost 300 new homes.
