Fred costs fan £1m jackpot during Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest

Fred's third goal during Manchester United's victory over Nottingham Forest stopped one fan from becoming a millionaire after predicting five other results correctly.

United were comfortably in control throughout during their 3-0 victory over the East Midlands side on Tuesday. Marcus Rashford gave the Reds the lead with a smart near post finish on 19 minutes.

Anthony Martial made it two just moments later thanks to a superb counter attack breezed through Forest. At this stage, one punter with bet365 was set to win £1m having correctly predicted six scores in their '6 Scores Challenge' over the Boxing Day schedule.

However, their dreams were shattered in the 87th minute as United's Brazilian rounded off the victory with a well-placed effort. While most Reds fans were celebrating, this punter was devastated as he saw his prize drop to £1,000.

Discussing the close call, bet365's Steve Freeth said: "The £1m jackpot may not have gone but we’ve had another big pay-out of over £200,000 in consolation prizes after the latest round of the 6 Scores Challenge taking us to well over £1m on that front. Over 15,000 players correctly predicted three out of six, almost 2,000 managed to get four and 60 received £1,000 each for five correct results after a set of fixtures that included a dramatic stoppage-time [Rayan] Ait-Nouri winner at Goodison Park, Darwin Nunez forgetting his shooting boots at Villa Park and substitute Fred scoring late to seal three points for Manchester United."

The Reds' attention will now turn to New Year's Eve when they return to action on the road at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Saturday's match at Molineux will mark Julen Lopetegui's first at home in the Premier League having started his reign with back-to-back victories against Gillingham and Everton.
