A 55-year-old woman has died after being struck by lightning in a "freak accident" while hiking through a mountain range in Scotland.
Isobel Bytautas was hiking on Na Gruagaichean, near Ben Nevis on Scotland's west coast, when she and another member of her group were hit, the BBC reported.
Police Scotland said both hikers were airlifted to hospital, where the woman died of her injuries. The other member of the group is in a stable condition.
The Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team's Andy Nelson told the BBC it was "very, very rare" for someone to be struck on a hill.
"I know there have been incidents around Lochaber at sea level but it's very, very rare and the first time I've experienced one being involved with a direct hit with lightning on a hill," he said.
"We're quite used to seeing nasty accidents but this was very unusual. I would say it was a freak accident."
The Met Office said it had recorded a number of lightning strikes on the day in the area.
Mountaineering Scotland said on its website that although direct lightning strikes on people were "relatively rare", they could be "extremely violent and often fatal".
