Fraudsters are pretending to be police officers to try and con you out of money

Fraudsters are pretending to be from the police to try and con elderly people out of money.

Greater Manchester Police says it has been made aware of scammers who are targeting older people by phoning them and pretending to be officers, before asking for their bank details.

The caller claims to be investigating fraudulent activity on the person's account, and says they have arrested someone, but need their details to confirm it.

Police in Salford have shared a warning about the scam and are urging people not to share personal information.

They said: "Please speak with family, friends and neighbours and advise them that they should not reveal any bank account information to anybody on the phone or transfer any money to an unknown bank account.

"These people can sound very convincing but don’t be afraid to put the phone down".

Police have also shared guidance on how to avoid falling victim to the scam.

This includes never disclosing bank account details or a pin number over the phone, as banks and the police would never ask for this information, and never sending cash, or bank cards via a courier or taxi if someone requests it.
