Fraudster with 'Glasgow accent' pretends to be cop in lockdown fine scam

Cops are warning Scots of an elaborate phone scam in which a fraudster is impersonating police officers.

A bogus caller, described as having a Glaswegian accent, phoned a Clydebank resident claiming to be a police officer dealing with a breach of coronavirus lockdown regulations.

The told the call recipient they had breached the rules and would have to pay a fine over the phone.

Luckily the resident became suspicious and hung up stating they would phone police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said “Exploiting the coronavirus public health emergency to try and dupe people into handing over money is despicable. Thankfully on this occasion, the member of the public was suspicious and ended the call.

“We are encouraging everyone to be vigilant to scams and to share our advice with family and friends. Before parting with money or information take a few moments to stop and think - only criminals will try to rush or panic you.”

Police Scotland's top tips to avoid fraudsters

1. The fraudsters often use spoof numbers, making the call appear as though it is coming from a genuine bank number. It is for this reason police advise that if you call your bank back, you should use a different phone to the one the initial call was received on.

2. Always double check numbers you're given to call back on or call through an independently checked number, such as the main customer care number for the organisation and ask to be put through

3. If you are concerned, consider visiting your local branch instead of speaking to someone over the phone

4. Never give out a banking password or PIN number over the phone

5. If you have concerns or suspicions report them to police as soon as possible on 101.
