Fraudster who claimed to have cancer and £400m fortune arrested

Bodycam footage shows the moment a man who claimed he had cancer and was worth £400m to con his victims was arrested.

Joseph Gibson, 35, of Penbryn Nant, Ruthin, Denbighshire, told his victims that he had cancer and that he had served in the Special Boat Service, and owned luxury yachts and cars.

Two of his victims, whom he met on Tinder, believed his lies and gave him money that they thought would be used to fund private cancer treatment and clothes. Another victim lost more than £18,000 after she took out loans to invest in Gibson’s bogus investment deals.

He was eventually arrested and admitted four counts of fraud, relating to three women and one man, whom he conned out of £68,000 between July 2020 and October 2021.

Gibson was jailed for three years and two months at Bristol Crown Court on Thursday (20 August). The judge also ordered the start of proceedings to recover money gained through his fraud.
