Fraudster slammed for 'horrible betrayal' after using cancer scam to fund wedding

ECHO readers have condemned a woman who faked a cancer diagnosis to help fund her wedding.

Friends launched an online fundraiser when Toni Standen claimed her ovarian cancer was so severe she was going to die.

But her heartbreaking story has now been exposed as a lie and she is being prosecuted over the con.

Last week the 29-year-old, from West Derby, pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation, with District Judge Nicholas Sanders slamming her for her "horrible breach of trust".

Those comments have since been echoed by readers left appalled at Standen's behaviour.

Nicola Gladys wrote on the ECHO's Facebook page: "Having cancer is not something that should be lied about. I feel sorry for her family and friends that likely went through hell all that time worrying about her and supporting her, only to discover that it was all lies.

"Also, her dad died thinking his daughter was suffering and was going to pass away. Not to mention what her mother went through losing her husband and thinking she would also lose her child."

Thes Willis wrote: "After losing one of my close friends to cancer a couple of years ago this angered me and upset me so much.

"My best friend left behind a daughter and a loving husband. Her cancer was aggressive but she fought hard. This ridiculous excuse of a cell is not human, not compassionate and an abomination."

Yvette Lowe branded Standen a "horrible, horrible woman" while Rach Murray said: "Went to college with this girl, been following her story on Facebook and she broke my heart every single time.

"To find out she has done something like this I’m absolutely disgusted and angry!! After losing two grandparents to cancer very young makes me even more angry!! Disgusting!!!"

And Carol Leigh wrote: "She deserves to go to jail not just for the horrible betrayal to her friends but because she has belittled people who are actually suffering and terminally ill with cancer.

"To do this to family and friends all for the sake of a big wedding is pathetic selfish and unforgivable and doesn't deserve friends."
