Fraud warning issued over Thomas Cook refunds as scams reported

A warning is going out to holiday makers who have lost out with the collapse of firm Thomas Cook as scams have been reported by those seeking refunds.

Many people who lost booked holidays as well as those in the middle of their trips and had to be rescued from across the globe when the company entered administration on Monday are seeking refunds or compensation.

But Action Fraud are warning people to be vigilant as the there has been a spike in unsolicited calls, texts or social media messages promising to help and asking for personal or financial details.

The Government body is also urging people not to click on links in unexpected emails.

Members of the public have reported receiving calls and messages offering “refunds” by people purporting to be associated with, or acting on behalf of Thomas Cook.

A spokesman for Action Fraud said: "Legitimate organisations will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your PIN, card details, or full banking passwords. If you get a call or message asking for these, it’s a scam.

"Remember, your bank or the police will never ask you to transfer money out of your account, or ask you to hand over cash for safe-keeping."

If you think you have been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via our  online reporting tool.
