Fratellis frontman Jon Lawler smashed up guitars at gig for Royal Family and demanded to be paid in casino chips

Fratellis frontman Jon Lawler claims he once refused to go on stage in Monaco at a Royal ball until he was paid half upfront in casino chips... and then proceeded to smash up instruments when he got there.

Jon was chatting on the Daily Record's Facebook Live ahead of an exclusive recording for American chat show host James Corden which will see the band showcase their new single Need A Little Love from platinum selling album Half Drunk Under A Full Moon.

The Chelsea Dagger and Whistle For the Choir hitmaker claims he is more mellow these days, but admitted he reached peak rock n roll when he was asked to play for Princesses Stephanie and Caroline and Prince Albert of Monaco at the Rose Ball in 2009.

He said: "We were playing in Monaco, which is not somewhere we would normally play or should be, at Princess Caroline's Rose Ball they have every year. It's themed and that year the theme was Rock n Roll. It was Chuck Berry and the Fratellis on the bill."

He added: '"Its kind of shameful really but I decided an hour before I went on that I wouldn't go on unless I got my share of the fee in poker chips cause it was in a casino. Our tour manager, the poor guy had to spend an hour running around trying to make that happen, cause he really thought we wouldn't go on and play.

"I just wanted to see if he would do it and he did it and he actually got my fee in poker chips."

"Then, in a fit of rage I promptly destroyed, smashed everything on stage, instruments and amps, and so all the poker chips went to pay for all the damage we caused.

"That was a long time ago though. I wouldn't do it now. I'm too lazy. It takes too much effort to do it.

"It was a bit of a mix of theatrics and anger. I really wanted to do it and sometimes you have to indulge these things. It was a long time ago and I'm far too lazy now."

Jon and his bandmembers Mince and Baz played for James Corden and The Kelly Clarkson show in iconic Glasgow locations The Shed in Govan and the Riverside Museum.
