A Frasier reboot is reportedly in the works at Paramount+.
According to Variety and TV Line, the discussions around a new iteration of the beloved Kelsey Grammer comedy are still in the very early stages.
Grammer, who starred as the show's titular character from 1993 to 2004, has been trying to reboot the Cheers spin-off for some time, though sources say that cost had been among the issues preventing it from happening. As Variety surmises, were Grammer and his Frasier costars to return, they'd likely expect comparable pay to what they were earning when the show went off the air (Grammer was reportedly earning 1.6m per episode by the end).
Also starring David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin, Jane Leeves, and John Mahoney, Frasier earned 37 Emmy Awards over the course of its 11 seasons and 264 episodes on NBC.
John Mahoney, who played Frasier's father Martin Crane, died in 2018 at the age of 77.
In 2018, Gilpin, who portrayed radio producer Roz Doyle on Frasier, alluded to the idea of bringing the show back. “If there was a way that everyone agreed on – not me, but David Lee and Peter Casey and Kelsey and Jimmy Burrows and all of those guys – and everybody thought it was a good idea, then yeah. Hell, yeah!” she said.
Also, in a 2018 conversation on the Hollywood & Levine podcast, Gilpin spoke to former scriptwriter Ken Levine about a possible reboot.
“It’s come up a few times over the years and from all kinds of places," she said. "I don’t know, I don’t know what’s going on with it, I swear to God ... But what a great thing, that people are interested in it and people want to know, wonder what’s going on. I’m wondering what’s going on. My agents and manager are really wondering what’s going on."
“But I think it’s just in the works...,” she continued. “There’s a lot of people involved in this. People forget that it was a spin-off of Cheers, I mean younger people that have found it on Netflix, that means that there are so many people from Cheers that have to OK everything.”
