Kelsey Grammer has revealed that the planned Frasier reboot will feature some major changes for his character.
While appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the actor confirmed that plans for a return to the 1990s sitcom are moving forward, with “a group of writers” currently working on a new version.
“The first principle is that it is a different story, basically,” he continued. “The same group of characters, but in a different setting. Something has changed in their lives.”
Grammer added that he hopes the series will move the story forward and make it “the third act of Frasier rather than trying to pick it up, like Will & Grace did, right where they were.”
“He’s past the radio show,” he added. “He might be an art dealer. He might be a professor. We don’t know yet.” The original series, itself a spin-off of Cheers, saw Frasier work as a radio therapist.
He suggested that the character may also still be living in Chicago, where he moved at the end of the show’s final episode, leaving the familiar surroundings of the show’s Seattle setting.
The actor further mentioned the death of the actor who played his onscreen father, adding: “Certainly, John Mahoney died over a year ago and we would probably deal with that a little bit, dad being gone.”
