Fraser Island bushfire still burning a month after blaze started by illegal campfire

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers are searching for campers who are thought to have sparked a large bushfire that has burned through more than 25,000 hectares of national park on Fraser Island.

The blaze has been burning for a month and is unlikely to be extinguished until significant rain reaches the island.

There could still be closures during the upcoming Christmas school holidays.

The fire has forced the evacuation of 10 camping zones and a ranger station on the World Heritage-listed island.

Residents in one of the island's townships are preparing as the fire approaches.

Jack Worcester, shop and campground manager for Cathedrals on Fraser, said the sky had been orange.

"There's a fair bit of ash falling. We've been raking and clearing gutters in preparation," he said.

Mr Worcester said the bushfire had burned "all the way down to the sand" in some parts further north.

"The whole island width, from us to the tip [has burned]," he said.

"About half of the island has burned."

Authorities are expected to bring in a water-bombing helicopter today to help fight the fire.

Queensland Department of Environment spokeswoman Emma O'Connor said the fire was started on October 14.

"Early indications suggest the fire was started after an illegal campfire was not extinguished properly," Ms O'Connor said.

"The public has been generous in sharing information in relation to the cause of this fire and investigations are continuing."

Rural fire crews and Queensland Parks and Wildlife are fighting the blaze.

It was started at the northern end of the island and was fanned towards the north-west across the island.

Wind changes have pushed it south towards over the past two weeks, travelling more than 40 kilometres down the Island.

Firefighters have backburned to shore up containment lines around the Orchid Beach township and since then the Dundubara Ranger Station and camping area has also come under threat.

Campfires are not allowed on Fraser Island unless in a fire ring at Dundubara or Waddy Point campgrounds.
