The Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s knee injury against Burnley leaves England needing a back-up for Joe Hart.

West Brom’s keeper Ben Foster has been ruled out for six months after damaging cruciate knee ligaments, leaving Jack Butland as Hodgon’s option.

Ronald Koeman, the Southampton manager, was not optimistic about Forster’s injury after the 2-0 defeat of Burnley. “The news on Fraser is that there is something on his knee. He is now taking a scan and we have to wait for news about that. It’s not looking good.”

Kelvin Davis came in for Forster for his first appearance since February 2014. “We had to change Fraser,” said Koeman, “but Kelvin did a great job and that’s always good to have an experienced goalkeeper on the bench. He looked very comfortable.”

Forster and Hart were the only goalkeepers named last week by Roy Hodgson in his England squad.
