Fraser Forster heading for Celtic medical as Hoops hero closes in on stunning transfer

Fraser Forster is closing in on a sensational return to Celtic.

The giant goalkeeper is heading for a medical today and could complete a move back to the club he left five years ago.

Forster has fallen out of favour at Southampton and is currently third choice behind Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy.

Now a deal has been agreed between the two clubs and Forster is heading for pre-signing medical checks before completing a season-long loan deal.

It's understood Southampton would have a recall option on the deal.

Celtic boss Lennon has targeted the 6ft 7in England international after Scott Bain suffered a dislocated thumb leaving the Hoops with only Craig Gordon as an established first choice.

The 31-year-old won three titles with the Hoops in a three-year spell from 2011.

He was signed by Lennon from Newcastle and moved on to Saints for £10million in 2014 where he broke a record for minutes without conceding a goal - 708 - three years ago.

In total the keeper kept a pretty decent 37 clean sheets in 107 Premier League appearances for Southampton.

But he spectacularly fell out of favour at St Mary’s and has played just one top team match since December 2017.

Forster was a favourite with the Hoops faithful and his huge presence saw him make his mark in Europe too, playing a big part in the 2-1 victory over Barcelona in November 2012.

Now he could be set to return to Parkhead with less than two weeks to go to the first derby clash of the season with Rangers.

Lennon revealed yesterday he was looking to add another three players to his squad before the transfer window closes on September 2. The Hoops boss is eager to bring in a right-back, left-back and a left winger.
