Frantic search and rescue operation launched after 'small plane goes down' in Irish Sea

The coastguard has launched a major search and rescue operation after a plane went down in the Irish Sea.

The plane, which is believed to be a small light aircraft, is understood to have crashed off Puffin Island, Anglesey, North Wales.

Police were called at 12.59pm to reports of a "possible crash".

North Wales Live reports it is believed to involve a light aircraft which is most likely privately owned.

Police said: "We received a call at 12.59pm today (Monday) reporting a possible crash involving a light aircraft in the Penmon area.

"Officers are currently assisting HM Coastguard and our enquiries are ongoing."
