Franky Zapata will re-attempt hoverboard Channel crossing this weekend

Whatever happens with Brexit,  there will be easier ways of getting into Britain than a dangerous trip on a hoverboard.

This hasn’t put off 40 year old French inventor and ‘watercraft’ pilot, Franky Zapta, who will attempt to make the 20 minute flight from Sangatte, France into Dover by his own invention: the “Flyboard Air” an innovative turbine-powered hoverboard.

This won’t be his first attempt - just last week he tried the risky crossing, but was unsuccessful.

His hoverboard only carries enough fuel for 10 minutes, meaning Mr Zapata has to make a careful landing onto a platform halfway across the Channel, where he swaps out his kerosene-filled backpack before taking off.

Franky’s flight attempt ended as he fell into the water, failing to complete the refueling.

"It is a huge disappointment. He made his rendez-vous with the refuelling boat but he must have missed the platform by just a few centimetres," a member of his technical team said.

"We practised this manoeuvre dozens of times in heavier seas, with platforms that moved more, without any problems.

"It wasn't the wind, it was the waves. The platform was two metres above the deck, every movement of the boat is exaggerated."

However, this weekend’s attempt should be better, according to the inventor.

“We’ve decided to use a bigger boat for refueling,'' a spokesman told French media.
