Part of a terminal at Frankfurt Airport in Germany was evacuated after someone got past security into the boarding areas, police said.
Federal police stopped boarding at part of the airport’s Terminal 1 and evacuated part of the security area.
Passengers described scenes of “confusion” as they were evacuated from the terminal.
Adam Miller said on Twitter: “Still crazy, people are exiting. Just a bunch of confusion, fortunately no panicking.”
The terminal later reopened after police found the unauthorised people.
A spokeswoman said they were now interviewing a French family of four people.
They said it was not clear why members of the family got through security.
In a tweet the federal police initially said: “In area A of Terminal 1 at the Frankfurt airport, there are police intervention measures.
“This includes an immediate boarding stop and clearing the security area in levels 2 and 3.
“Further information will follow.”
On Twitter, Frankfurt Airport warned “flight disruptions can be affected” and urged passengers to check the status of their flight.
German airline Lufthansa, whose main hub is in Frankfurt, tweeted to say boarding had been stopped at the A and Z levels of the airport’s Terminal 1.
It said it could not yet say how many flights might be delayed or cancelled as a result of the evacuation.
Last month, around 300 flights were cancelled at Munich airport, Germany’s second-biggest after Frankfurt, after a similar incident in which a person passed through the security area without being checked. More than than 30,000 passengers were affected.
