Frank Underwood is dead. Now the question is: what (or who) killed him?

It's official: Frank Underwood is dead.

The latest teaser for the final season of House of Cards confirms Kevin Spacey's former character has been killed off, after Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct last year.

The teaser shows Robin Wright, who plays Frank Underwood's wife Claire, standing emotionless beside her husband's grave.

"I'll tell you this though, Francis," she says.

"When they bury me, it won't be in my backyard. And when they pay their respects, they'll have to wait in line."

Who killed Frank Underwood?

The teaser gives nothing away about Underwood's death, so the question for fans will now be what, or who, is responsible.

Netflix will be hoping that's enough to lure back viewers who fear it won't be worth watching without the show's former main character.

Netflix has said the season will focus on Wright's devious character, who became US president at the end of season five.

Spacey has stepped away from public life

Spacey was dropped from House of Cards last year after more than 30 people accused the Oscar-winning actor of sexual misconduct.

The wave of allegations began when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of trying to seduce him in 1986 when Rapp was 14.

Spacey apologised for any inappropriate conduct with Rapp, and said he would seek treatment, but has not commented since.

Los Angeles prosecutors this week announced they would not file sexual assault charges against Spacey in one case involving a 1992 accusation because it fell outside the California statute of limitations.

A second case is under review by the Los Angeles District Attorney's office

House of Cards put Netflix on the map as a home for original entertainment when the series debuted in 2013.

The final season will be released on November 2 and will consist of just eight episodes rather than the usual 13.
