Frank Reich on Colts offense: ‘It’s not going to be fair’

The Indianapolis Colts only added one offensive skill player to the roster during the 2019 NFL Draft in the form of playmaking wide receiver Parris Campbell.

Campbell, a Day 2 selection from Ohio State, is a perfect fit for the offense given his speed (4.31 40) and reliable hands working the underneath routes. Adding another weapon to the already impressive Colts offense has head coach Frank Reich excited.

And he doesn’t feel it’s fair for the rest of the league.

“It looks strong,” Reich said of the offense after Day 2 of the draft. “And then all of a sudden, now you’re giving us more? This isn’t fair. It’s not going to be fair. And then you get a guy that run 4.31 and you just say, ‘It’s going to be fun to see these guys work together.'”

It isn’t clear if the Colts will use Campbell on the outside more than Ohio State did. His frame allows it, but he only saw press coverage a limited amount of times working primarily from the slot.

Regardless, Campbell is a perfect fit for the Colts offense and will be joining a wide receiver room that has great upside. Led by T.Y. Hilton, the Colts have a lot of promise in the room with the additions of Campbell and Devin Funchess along with the return of Deon Cain from ACL surgery.

Couple that with the strength of the tight end room and the efficiency of the backfield behind a stout offensive line and the unit becomes even more optimistic. Watching Campbell develop is something Reich is looking forward to.

“You look at the talent there, you look at the talent and the perimeter. You look at the vertical speed down the field. You look at the playmaking ability. You look at all the different ways that you can be multiple,” Reich said. “You’ve got a guy who was a former running back, but has wide receiver skill and runs 4.31 – every time he touches the ball really he’s a threat to go the distance. It will be fun to see him develop.”

Of course, nothing that’s said truly matters until the pads come on and the games start, but the Colts have an incredibly promising unit on paper. Especially with Andrew Luck coming off of a normal offseason.

Though few additions have been made, the Colts offense is one that has the chance to become an elite unit in its second season under the command of Reich.
