Frank McAvennie pinpoints the Neil Lennon Celtic position that could scupper Ryan Fraser signing coup

Celtic legend Frank McAvennie reckons Neil Lennon might think twice about moving for Ryan Fraser after the star's decision to opt out of playing for Bournemouth since the resumption of English football.

The 26-year-old winger's contract expired on June 30 and he refused to jeopardise a money-spinning free transfer move by playing in the remaining games of the Premier League season and potentially getting injured.

The pacy wideman, who cost the Cherries just £400,000 from Aberdeen back in January 2013, has been on the radar of a host of sides but bookies have place the Hoops at the top of the list.

And McAvennie feels the star's decision to put his own future above that of his club - who are fighting a bitter relegation battle - won't sit easily with Lennon.

He told Football Insider : “I understand what Ryan is doing by not saying anything but he has let his teammates at Bournemouth down.

“Managers like Lenny will not like that because he has left Eddie Howe in the mire, definitely.

“I understand he is looking after his family but listen, it is football, you can get injured.

“It is all about money and he must have made lots of money by now. He must be insured as well.

“There are a lot of players in England who signed until the end of the season and he should have signed that extra month so he could have played. I do not get it.”

Fraser's former manager Howe has been supportive of Fraser's decision despite McAvennie's comments.

He said: "He’s a player we loved working with.

"His journey and time with us overall, when you look at it, was a hugely successful one.

"We wish him well in his next adventure."
