Frank McAvennie claims St. Johnstone's Ali McCann is 'not good enough' to sign for Celtic

Celtic legend Frank McAvennie has poured cold water on the idea of Ali McCann moving to Parkhead - by insisting the St. Johnstone midfielder is simply not good enough.

Northern Ireland international McCann is fresh from an absolutely outstanding season at the heart of Saints' midfield after playing a crucial role in the Perth club capturing an historic Scottish Cup and League Cup double.

McCann's form has seen him linked repeatedly with Celtic, with the Daily Record reporting that he could cost the Hoops as much as £2million.

But McAvennie knows what it takes to be a success in the east end of Glasgow and the retired striker reckons McCann doesn't possess the required abilities.

He told Football Insider : "Nobody is going to want to leave St Johnstone. Look at the togetherness they had when they won the cups.

"It was magnificent. To be honest, I don’t think he’s ready for Celtic anyway. He’s the one for the future.

"Celtic are going to try and sign players who can walk into any team and stay there.

"That’s my problem with that move. I just don’t think he’s good enough unfortunately.

"Celtic have too many players who are just bit-part players. They need to recruit better."

With Ryan Christie today linked with a cut-price move to Southampton, and a host of other top stars seemingly on their way out of the club, the Celtic hierarchy had better get recruiting - and quickly.
