Frank Leboeuf delivers verdict on incoming Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy and slams Kepa

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has given his verdict on expected new signing Edouard Mendy.

The official confirmation is yet to arrive, but Chelsea are understood to have agreed a deal for the Rennes goalkeeper for a fee of around £22million.

The signing comes amid intense criticism for current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga, who endured his latest nightmare performance against Liverpool on Sunday.

And according to former Blue Leboeuf, Mendy will do a 'much better' job than the Spaniard.

Frank Lampard vows to support Kepa Arrizabalaga after another costly mistake

"He had a very good season at Rennes, I am very confident that he can do the job much better than Kepa and even [Willy] Caballero," Leboeuf told ESPN FC.

"I don’t know if there is another goalkeeper that Chelsea could find, but for that amount of money it’s a bargain to have Mendy.

"He’s a tall goalkeeper, very agile and I’m sure he’s going to do the job. But Kepa cannot do the job anymore, it’s over."

Speaking about the Kepa situation, Leboeuf added: "Maybe the first mistake from Frank [Lampard] is to keep on putting Kepa in goal where the guy has completely lost his confidence, I think Caballero should play.

"He [Kepa] cannot play, his head is in a different planet, he doesn’t feel football, he doesn’t even live football, he just wondering if he’s still a goalkeeper, he shouldn’t play."
