Frank Lampard told to make bold Billy Gilmour decision as Chelsea sent Christian Pulisic message

Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Tuesday, January 12.

Lampard urged to make Gilmour decision

Former Chelsea midfielder Alan Hudson believes Frank Lampard should hand Billy Gilmour an extended run in the team.

The 19-year-old Scot was handed just his second start of the season on Sunday as the Blues cruised past League Two outfit Morecambe, winning 4-0, to book an FA Cup fourth round date with Championship side Luton Town later this month.

Although Lampard has a plethora of central-midfielders to choose from, including the likes of N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount, Hudson is adamant that Gilmour is worthy of a sustained run in the team.

Billy Gilmour pushing for Chelsea starting XI

He told CaughtOffside: “Billy Gilmour has a big future, a fine player in midfield – but the problem is although he is a fine footballer, Frank has a big problem in who he leaves out if Billy is the answer?

“Playing against Morecambe is different from Manchester City, as you know, but this young man looks to be going places.

“I think Billy should now be given a long run in the team and build the midfield around him and Kante – two players who are more consistent and reliable.”

Bold Pulisic admission made

Former USA international Alexi Lalas has revealed that he believes winger Christian Pulisic is "too good" to play for Chelsea.

Since joining the Blues from German giants Borussia Dortmund back in 2019, the winger has enjoyed a sequence of eye-catching performances, though injury issues have impacted his progress in west London.

Nevertheless, when on song, the USA international has shown glimpses that he can have a long, successful stay in the Premier League.

However, according to Lalas, Pulisic is in need of having better players around him.

"I'm saying it now, Christian Pulisic is too good for Chelsea," Lalas told the State of the Union Podcast.

"In the loss against Manchester City last week, he was fantastic. He was the only player in Chelsea who tried.

"He needs better players around him."

Leeds not suited to Tomori's needs

This month's transfer window is likely to offer Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori the chance to leave Stamford Bridge and seek regular, first-team football elsewhere.

Despite being a regular fixture in Lampard's plans last season, the former Derby County loanee has struggled for game-time this term, making just four appearances in all competitions.

With a loan move likely, a whole host of Premier League clubs have been linked with signing him for the remainder of the season.

One of those clubs is Leeds United, who could be in need of adding a new centre-back to their ranks in an attempt to improve their defensive troubles.

However, as outlined by our Chelsea reporter - Adam Newson - a move to Elland Road may not be the best solution for Tomori to get his career back on track.
